Coping with Unemployment, Critical Incidents, and Other Life Setbacks

Human and Organizational Understanding and Development

Unemployment, critical incidents, and other life setbacks are shocking events for which few are prepared. In processing the experience we have to deal with physical and emotional reactions that can be controlled. The rewards are worth the effort as we thereby may control our destiny. To assist in developing resilience, a series of booklets were prepared for different groups, starting with unemployment, whose cover is shown below.

These booklets were prepared to explain how we can cognitively intervene after exposure to an unfortunate event and the experience of stress. Basic knowledge is provided about how stressors lead to stress and to impart useful knowledge and techniques that will empower you in developing self-awareness for self-help.

A vast literature was explored with particular attention paid to credible scholarly literature. A positive approach is taken because much of the work in this century has found that persons are more resilient that previously assumed. In the 21st Century, Positive Psychology gained ground over Victim Psychology.

Each of us is unique and will approach misfortune in his or her own way. Nonetheless, there are ways that have proven to be fruitful with other persons and groups. From the many means available, an individualized personal approach needs to be selected, learned, and practiced. Coping is not a passive activity and requires hard work.

These Guidebooks are intentionally kept short and pointed. Each starts with how we cognitively appraise our situation and proceeds to ways in which we might cope to reduce stress. A brief reading through is recommended followed by return to stand-alone sections that you feel may be useful.

As there is ready access to the Internet at home, or in the local library, guides are provided to Web sources of more information. Also, many college libraries allow guests access to their search engines, books, and full-text databases. I encourage you to pursue added resources.

It bears repeating, your individual effort goes a long way toward your developing resilience. Throughout this material, you and your is used repeatedly. It’s personal! Your effort, however, may be enhanced by joining with others in Circles of Change.
