MY DISSERTATION |
I began the serious study of the academic literature on leadership in 1995. This was in preparation for my dissertation relating personality to performance. Having a substantial background in statistics and research design it was apparent to me that the structure of the corps of cadets was a naturally occurring experimental arrangement. For three months twelve upperclass platoon drill sergeants, assisted by squad leaders and assistant squad leaders, led three squads of new students at the school. As the training was simultaneously conducted in the same locale there was a basis for unbiased comparison among groups. At the completion of initial training the new recruits rated their officers.
